Resident of Mumbai an 83-year-old Dnyaneshwari Swami earned a new lease of life through a minimally invasive, life-saving procedure, called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), in which a Third Generation Leak proof valve was installed high up in the heart to control blood flow to the heart, thereby increasing the patient’s chances of survival.
A few days ago she had started sudden chest pain and shortness of breath struck. The family worried and admitted her to Mumbai Central Wockhardt Hospital where she was diagnosed with a heart attack. Then doctors performed Angioplasty and saved her life.
Dr. Ankur said, the patient underwent to ECG and 2DEcho on arrival and it was revealed that she suffered a cardiac attack and one of the three cardiac arteries were occluded (occlusion means partial or complete blockage of coronary artery bypass blood flow). The patient also had other medical issues such as low blood pressure and kidney diseases. Aspiration was used to dissolve the blood clot, and a drug-eluting stent was used to treat the affected session, and it took about 7 days to fully recover. It was also noticed during the 2DEcho that the patient had extreme Aortic Stenosis (that is a narrowing opening of the aortic valve). This limits the flow of blood from the left ventricle to the aorta and may also affect the pressure in the left atrium (one of the heart’s four chambers were located on the left posterior side) with 35 percent heart pumping.
Instead of conducting high-risk open-heart surgery, a novel transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was performed to support the normal function of heart valves of a patient and that helped her with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery In India. “TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure to repair a small aortic valve (aortic valve stenosis) that does not open properly. The patients who are not eligible for other treatment options due to their age, overall health or other medical issues, it is a blessing. TAVR’s goal is to install a new artificial valve to take over the work of the damaged aortic valve, explained by Dr. Ankur.
A catheter was used to maneuver and place the new leak-proof valve of the third generation that slips into the old valve. The new valve expands once placed, pushing the damaged valve parts out of the way, and regulating the blood flow into the aorta. A shallow valve implant was performed which is high due to lack of calcium in the patient. The leak-proof valve of the third generation is the first of its kind to be used at Wockhardt Hospital in Western India. This helps in increasing the patient’s survival rate. Normally in such cases, the chances of causing death are 15-20 %. Chances have come in less than 1 % with the help of modern technology, Dr. Haresh Mehta added.
It took some 45 minutes to proceed. “Valve replacement surgery procedure was carried out, instead of a large incision, there’s only a small puncture and it’s less painful. There are a minimized hospital stay and a quick recovery. In three days, the patient was able to breathe easily, and her co-morbidities were tackled,” said Dr. Ankur.
“I was immediately rushed to Wockhardt Hospital after I suffered a heart attack. Because my family was aware of the symptoms, I could seek prompt treatment.
