Lasik eye surgery stands for laser assisted in situ keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A mechanical microkeratome or a laser keratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma, the middlesection of the cornea. Pulses from a computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the stroma and the flap is replaced. Lasik eye surgery is a medical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses.
Prior to Lasik Eye surgery procedure
Before the lasik eye surgery begins the opthamologist will perform an eye exam to determine eye health, what kind of vision correction is needed and how much laser ablation is required. The opthamologist also will look for signs of dry eye disease, which must be treated and cleared up before lasik eye surgery can be performed. Even if the patient’s eyes have a normal tear film, the opthamologist as a precaution may recommend treatment to reduce the risk of developing dry eyes after lasik eye surgery.
The patients wearing soft contact lenses are usually instructed to stop wearing three weeks before surgery. Before the lasik eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a pachymeter to determine their thickness, and with a topographer to measure their surface contour. Using low-power lasers, a topographer creates a topographic map of the cornea. This process also detects astigmatism and other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. Using this information, the opthamologist calculates the amount and the locations of corneal tissue to be removed during the lasik eye surgery.
The lasik eye surgery is performed with the patient awake and mobile; however, the patient is sometimes given a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops to reduce the pain.
Flap creation - The opthamologist will make the patient lie down; will then make sure the patient’s eye is positioned directly under the laser. A kind of retainer is placed under your eyelids to keep them open during the surgery. A corneal suction ring is applied to the eye, holding the eye in place. This step in the lasik eye surgery can sometimes cause small blood vessels to burst, resulting in bleeding or subconjunctival hemorrhage into the white of the eye. Once the eye is immobilized the surgeon will use an ink marker to mark the cornea before the flap is created. This flap is created with a mechanical microkeratome using a metal blade, or a femtosecond laser microkeratome that creates a series of tiny closely arranged bubbles within the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back, revealing the stroma, the middle section of the cornea. During the procedure the patient won't actually see the creation of the flap as it’s very thin.
Laser remodeling - The second step of the lasik eye surgery is to use an excimer laser to remodel the corneal stroma. The laser vaporizes tissue in a finely controlled manner without damaging the adjacent stroma. The layers of tissue removed are tens of micrometres thick. Performing the laser ablation in the deeper corneal stroma typically provides for more rapid visual recovery and less pain than the earlier technique.
During the second step, the patient's vision will become very blurry once the flap is lifted. They will be able to see only white light surrounding the orange light of the laser, which can lead to mild disorientation.
Repositioning of flap - After the laser has reshaped the stromal layer, the flap is carefully repositioned over the treatment area by the opthamologist and checked for the presence of air bubbles, debris, and proper fit on the eye. The flap remains in position by natural adhesion until healing is completed.
Recovery post lasik eye surgery
- The patient is not allowed to drive immediately after the surgery.
- The patient is recommended against any type of strenuous exercise.
- The patient should avoid rubbing his eyes to keep the flap in place.
- The patient is advised for rest for a week before returning to regular work.
