An angioplasty is a surgical repair or unblocking of a blood vessel especially a coronary artery. A balloon catheter comprises of an empty, collapsed balloon which is passed over the wire into the narrow locations and subsequently it is inflated to a fixed size. A sheath of thin plastic tube is then inserted into the artery in the groin or sometimes in the arm. The catheter is then passed through the sheath and guided inside the blood vessel to the arteries surrounding the heart. The small amounts of contrast material is then injected into the catheter and photographed using the X-rays as it moves through the chambers, heart valves and major vessels.<\/p>\n
With these digital images, the doctors can pinpoint the locations in the coronary arteries which has narrowed. The surgeon will now move the catheter into the artery at the bloackage site and then perform the interventional procedures that will last for around 90 to 120 minutes. Considering the preparation and recovery, you will be required to stay overnight at the hospital for observation.<\/p>\n
What to Expect with Angioplasty Recovery and After Care?<\/b><\/p>\n
In case of angiography performed through the artery in the groin, you will have to lay flat without bending the legs while the sheath is in place. Even after the sheath is removed at the end of the procedure, patients need to lay flat for six hours to prevent bleeding.<\/p>\n
You are not supposed to eat or drink anything except the clear liquids until the goin sheath is removed since nausea can occur during this period. When permitted to eat, you will advised to eat heart-healthy diet. In case you develop fever, swelling or experience pain in groin or chest pain then immediately bring it to notice of the nurse or the doctor. After returning back home, remove the dressing and push down on the pulse in the affected area. <\/b><\/p>\n
